Our Purpose

Ephesians 2:10 (NKJV)

For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them.

Have you ever wondered about your purpose in life? I have. What is it God has placed me on this planet to do? What is it He wants you to do? Sometimes I can get a little overwhelmed because I don’t want to be that person who is given a few talents, does nothing with them and then is reprimanded for not using those talents for God’s purposes. How do we know what we are to be about doing?

This verse gives me comfort because first, it says that God has done a work in us. The transformation in our lives, the talents or gifts He has given us are all outside of our control. When He saved us we were placed on the potter’s wheel of life and as we submit to Him, we are changed into something that represents His workmanship.  That vessel can then be used for whatever purposes God intends.

We don’t have to go on a speaking tour or make millions of dollars to be effective for the Kingdom of God. We just have to walk in the good works He created each of us to do. The works that he knew He wanted us to do before we were ever placed on that wheel. He picked us up, made us into something pleasing to Him that could fulfill His purpose in our lives, in the lives of others and yes, in this world. We don’t have to worry about doing great things for God. We just have to be faithful to use the gifts He gave us as we walk out His work in our lives.  If He means big things for us, we will do them.  If He means smaller things for us, we will do them.  If we are faithful to live out His workmanship in our lives, our output will depend on His purposes, and I like it that way.

What a comfort and confidence we have in this life to know that it really is all about God. He has prepared divine appointments and divine assignments in our lives that He planned for us from the beginning.  We are able to fulfill our specific purpose because He created us to do it and He enables us to do it, whatever it is.
