The Truth

John 14:6 (NKJV)

Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.

People say “Well, to tell you the truth…” and when they say that, not only do we expect honesty, we also half expect to hear something different than what we would normally think.  Our ears tune in a little better and we wait for it, we are expecting the unexpected.  We are expecting the truth.

Sometimes I let my mind roam back to how I think “early man” learned about truth. I’m not talking about cavemen in pictures carrying wooden clubs. You know, the kind you see in comics or in museums that teach evolution. No, I’m talking about Adam and Eve. They were the first humans. How did they learn about truth, honor, right, wrong, all those traits on which a culture is built? Remember? God walked with them.

Then I think about the Bible. Download a Bible App and do a search on how many times you find the word “truly”, “true” or “truth”. Then read the topic being discussed. The Bible is a plethora of instruction, a historical document inspired by God Himself.  So, not only did God impart truth as He walked with Adam, Eve, Cain, Able, and Seth; He also made sure someone like Moses, Elijah, John, Paul and others wrote down the truth so we would know what it is today.

The Bible lays out the truth of how we are to live in obedience to God’s unambiguous standards. Yes, there is just male or female. No, you don’t get to choose, God does. Yes, it is okay to be in sexual relations but no, not between same sex, animals or anything else. It is only acceptable between a man and woman within the parameter of marriage. No, we can’t live like our natural self wants and expect things to end up good. Yes, there is a God and not only does He set the rules, He is here to help. No, God is not just made up of love. If that were the case, we wouldn’t need to know right or wrong, truth or lie. God has standards that He expects us to follow and if we don’t, not only do we harm ourselves, He will one day evaluate us and pronounce judgement accordingly. Yes, our only hope to escape judgement is through the blood of Jesus Christ shed for us on a horrid cross.  Yes, that way of salvation is offered to all who will receive it.

All of that may seem a little “over the top” for a weekly blog.  It may be a little too much to think about all at once, but honestly, I just touched the basics.  There is so much more!  Think about it. How would this world be different if everyone always told the truth and lived out truth in our lives? What if honesty was the norm? God’s standard is truth and He has told us how we can live in truth.  When we speak truth we open the door for Him to be active in our lives. When we live in truth, we live as He intended.

Finally, here in John, Jesus says that the ONLY way to God the Father is through Him. Read the whole chapter if you don’t believe me.  Better yet, read the whole book of John and ask God to speak to your heart.  This is the most important truth of all.  If we try any other path to God except through Jesus, we won’t make it.  We can’t get there from here on our own. There is no substitute that will deliver the same outcome. There is no way for us to get it right.  We must live in right relationship with God. We do that through following Jesus Christ and His teachings. Anything that is not true is a lie.  Don’t believe a lie and for sure, don’t live one.  Truth is important.  Read your Bible. Learn what is true. Pray to God and follow Him.  Jesus is truth.

If you have never asked God to forgive you and given your life over to Him, please see the “How To” page on this site.  Nothing is more important than starting your journey in truth.
