Ezekiel 33:6 (NIV®)
But if the watchman sees the sword coming and does not blow the trumpet to warn the people and the sword comes and takes someone’s life, that person’s life will be taken because of their sin, but I will hold the watchman accountable for their blood.’
Tomorrow is one of the most consequential elections in my lifetime… and probably yours. As Christians, we must understand that, to do nothing is to choose. Some choose to stay out of politics because they think Caesar should be allowed to do his own thing but if God fearing people choose to sit by and do nothing, the robber will take everything in the house. Do not be naive. Every vacuum is eventually filled by something. We must do our part to make sure it is filled with the good and Godly. We must be salt and light.
I would like to suggest that this election is as much a spiritual gauge on our nation as it is a political one. It is also a gauge of our churches. We have never before had two more diametrically opposed candidates where issues of basic Christian morality and truth are on the ballot. Will the church stand up and speak?
The issues range from God creating us male and female, the preciousness of a newborn baby, the importance of protecting children, the requirement of sexual purity, the equal scales of justice being upheld, the importance of the rule of law, the protection of boundaries, the ability to speak and believe as God leads us and even the ability to gather together of our own free will. More than ever before, morality and truth are on the ballot. We cannot sit on the sidelines and expect everything to blow over and turn out okay. If the wrong people are in office, our country will suffer and the greatest indictment on the American church will be that we stayed home instead of joining the battle. I shudder to think that the demise of our country could be because “good” people fail to do anything to resist the evil at our doorstep. What an indictment on those of us who call ourselves Christians.
Will you join me in voting Tuesday, November 5th? Will you take a stand? To not choose is to refuse to be a part of the solution. To not vote is to abdicate our responsibility as Americans. We are all called to be a watchman on the wall for God’s purposes in our country.
This passage in Ezekiel explains it very clearly. Be the watchman that sees danger and does what he is tasked to do. Stop the invader. Warn the people. If we sleep at our post or, even worse, do nothing, the resulting defeat will be from our own hands. Do your part to make a difference. If you haven’t already made a plan to vote on Tuesday, make plans now. Have a contingency plan to make sure you don’t miss it. Set your heart and mind on the willingness to endure difficulty to make sure your vote is counted, yes, even if the line is very long and moving very slowly. It is worth it. Our country is worth it. Up and down ballot, despite any obstacles, we cannot be silent, we cannot ignore, we cannot quit. This Tuesday, more than ever before, VOTE. Our action is required.
